30 Career Tips from a PM – #21 Build your network with growth loops

No doubt you’ve been taught that your network is your net worth. Early on, it’s nothing more than a sapling, no fruit really to bear. But over time, as sun and rain feed it, one day it does begin to bear fruit and soon has fruit ready to harvest.

Your network is no different in its foundation. You need a continuous loop of actions to keep it growing so that it, too, can bear fruit.

The best part is that it doesn’t need to be complicated. On LinkedIn, the simplest effective growth loop is:

1. Post content (i.e. a blog, an article, a video, etc.)
2. Engage with others (i.e. comment, connect, DM, etc.)
3. Repeat

There’s no need to spend hours each day doing that loop. From not only my own experience, but those of many others on LinkedIn, even spending 10-15 minutes 2 or 3 times a week is a reasonable benchmark to shoot for. Bonus tip, as you meet new people, consider who they may be able to introduce you to in the near future.

It’s as simple a loop as planting and watering a seed. With consistency and time, those loops grow your network’s branches, and leaves, and one day, fruit.
