30 Career Tips from a PM – #2 A/B test your messaging

Career Tips from a PM (2/30) – A/B test your messaging.

The way you communicate your message is a critical skill in nearly any industry, any role. Frankly speaking, you could be the most talented and technically skilled person on the planet. But, if the what or way you communicate doesn’t resonate with who you’re talking to, your message will fall on deaf ears or worse, completely fly over their head.

For job seekers, this applies to your resume, your LinkedIn profile, and even how you introduce yourself to people.
For virtually everyone, however, this applies to anything you ask, offer, or need of anyone else (whether it’s asking for a promotion, selling a product or service, calling out for help, etc.).

The value you offer will not be valuable to everyone. The way you communicate or even what you communicate won’t resonate with everyone.

But that’s OKAY.

Now, mind you that what may work for someone in one situation may completely bomb in another. From experience, that means the only reliable way for you to figure out what message and what manner of communicating it works for your audience is to EXPERIMENT.

Pick one message and one mode of communication. Then test ONE thing at a time. i.e. What happens if I say it this way? What happens if I don’t mention that part? Etc.
Trial and error is the only reliable way you can fine tune your messaging (and learn how to do it on the fly mid-conversation). Sorry, no silver bullet here! Practice makes perfect.

Experiment. Iterate. Perfect. Start today and:
