Career Tips from a PM (10/30) – Don’t be afraid to follow-up.
One of the most memorable things I learned when I collaborated with project managers was that we should never be afraid to follow-up.
Whether we’re working with recruiters and hiring managers or with our teams to push an initiative towards the finish line, it’s important that we remember that we are all HUMAN.
This means that we almost definitely have a number of things we’re juggling day-by-day, and even more things to do to unblock them from who knows what and keep them moving forward. Quite frankly, you should expect things to fall through the cracks every now and then because we are NOT computers (maybe one day, but today is not that day) with an infallible memory and limitless energy.
The next time you’re waiting for something from someone, give them the benefit of the doubt and follow up. More importantly, follow up with CONTEXT. For job seekers, this could be a reminder of the value you bring to the table. For your coworkers and/or partners, this could be a reminder of why that deliverable is needed and when it’s needed by.
It costs you little energy and effort to follow up and hey, if they’re still not getting back to you after 2 or 3 attempts, move on strategically. Your time is valuable, too.
Don’t be afraid to follow up.
